A typical bow for mounted archery will be a wood laminate or fiberglass covered in leather, sometimes decorated with ornate painting and thread. Some are curvy, some relatively straight. Many are short compared to an Olympic recurve, while others, like the Japanese yumi bow, are quite long. What all of these bows have in common is the lack of a shelf. There are no wheels or pulleys, sights or peeps. Basically, we use a bare bow and rest the arrows on our knuckle or thumb when we shoot.
The bows pictured above are a small selection from my schooling bows. I like for my students to try different styles and draw weights to ensure they are comfortable with their equipment. Almost all of the bows made today are replicas of or were inspired by weapons used by different cultures from all over the world. Bows from different time periods and regions were built using locally sourced materials. This greatly impacted their shape and size. Now, with modern materials and technology available, bowyers have an uninhibited ability to create various shapes and styles.
An entry level bow can range in price from $90-$125 depending on the style and materials used to make it. These bows are usually mass produced using combinations of wood, fiberglass and leather. These are not traditional bow materials, but do offer an inexpensive option for those just starting or wanting to participate on a budget. Lets face it, when getting started, we are more likely to drop or dry fire our bow.

A laminate bow is going to be the next step up from a fiberglass bow. Laminate bows are made by layering wood and other materials with glue, then allowing them to dry while formed into a shape particular to the style of bow. These bows are much more efficient and lightweight, with an overall higher performance than a fiberglass bow of the same shape and size. Prices on laminate bows can range from $150 to $1000s. The quality and reliability can have just as broad of a range as the price. There are many great bows in the $300 and less price range.
